Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a battery last?
A lead-acid battery lasts about 42 months on average, but its lifespan depends on correct installation, suitability, climate, charging, vehicle use and regular maintenance. Long periods without use or charging can cause sulfation and shorten battery life, while proper care can help it provide years of reliable service.
What are the signs of a failing car battery?
Common symptoms include a slow engine crank when starting, flickering or dimming headlights, failing electrical components (like slow power windows)
Why does my battery fail in frost?
Cold weather slows the chemical reaction inside the battery, reducing its power, and thickens engine oil, making the engine harder to start. Keep the battery fully charged to help prevent freezing and damage.
Why does my battery go flat if the car isn't in use?
Vehicles experience "parasitic drain," which is a continuous draw of electrical current by onboard computers, security systems, and clocks. Over time, these will deplete a stationary battery.
Does a flat battery affect fuel consumption?
Yes. When a battery is running low on charge, your alternator must work significantly harder to replenish it. This places an added mechanical load on the engine, causing the vehicle to burn more fuel
Can a bad battery harm the car?
Yes! A weak or failing battery can put extra strain on your vehicle’s starting and charging systems. It can make it harder for your starter motor to do its job and may contribute to problems with other electrical components.
Ignoring a failing battery can lead to unexpected breakdowns and potentially costly repairs.
At Mitchell Batteries, we recommend getting your battery tested if you notice slow starting or other signs of a weak battery. A quick battery test can help identify problems early and keep you moving with confidence.
Will a short drive recharge my flat battery?
No. Starting your vehicle uses a lot of battery power, and a short drive may not give the alternator enough time to recharge it. If your battery is flat, a drive around the block probably won’t do the trick.
A battery charger may be needed to properly recharge the battery, depending on its condition.

How do I clean corroded battery terminals?
Corrosion appears as a white, green, or blue crust around the terminals. You can safely clean it by applying a mix of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) and water, scrubbing with a wire brush, rinsing with clean water, and applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly to prevent future buildup
How do I know if my car’s alternator is failing?
There are often some obvious symptoms when a car’s alternator is on its way out.
Lights or warnings lights on the dash may flicker or disappear, then re-appear again. This happens when the car’s battery is nearly flat and struggling to provide enough power.
When you start your car and it keeps turning over, but it may start, or it may not. This could mean your battery is low on charge because your alternator isn’t charging your battery properly. Don’t wait to find out, your car could be moments away from a dead battery and alternator, and you stranded.
What should I consider when buying a new battery?
Power (CCA)
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) measure a battery’s ability to start your vehicle in cold conditions. It’s important to choose a battery with the correct CCA rating for your vehicle.
Size and Fit
Make sure your new battery matches the size and dimensions of your existing battery so it fits securely in the allocated space under the bonnet.
Warranty
Battery warranties can vary depending on the brand and type of battery. We recommend choosing a warranty that suits your vehicle and driving needs.
Reserve Capacity
Reserve capacity is how long a battery can supply power if your vehicle’s alternator stops working. A higher reserve capacity can provide extra peace of mind when you need it most.

Do I need a special battery for a vehicle fitted with a stop/start feature?
Yes. stop/start vehicles put extra load on the battery - it needs to provide power to other electrical components and be able to give the car a powerful kick to start again. A standard car battery cannot provide the capabilities required for the SSV system. A special type of battery, often an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery, is required for an SSV vehicle.
